谴笱Ю绷礁霭胄∈钡牟┦柯畚目谑跃绾巍Ｖ档猛嫖兜氖牵凇断惹孛贰范子谩皃ragmatism”（实验主义）这个名词，到了1919年出版的《中国哲学史大纲》的时候，“实验主义”只在该书第八篇《别墨》第二章《〈墨辩〉论知识》出现了一次。然而，即使如此，他还在“实验主义”后加了括号，注明他所说的“实验主义”是“应用主义”的意思。＇71＇
事实上，凡是他在《先秦名学史》里用“实验主义”的字句，到了《中国哲学史大纲》都换成了“应用主义”。胡适回国后，用中文写成《中国哲学史大纲》的时候，不再侈言“实验主义”，而改用“应用主义”来描述先秦诸子的哲学。虽然直到1919年春天，在写《实验主义》时，他仍然说：“古代的哲学家如中国的墨翟、韩非（看我的《中国哲学史大纲》页153至165，又197，又379至384），如希腊的勃洛太哥拉＇今译：普罗泰戈拉＇（Protagoras），都可以说是实验主义的远祖。”但他马上承认：“今世的实验主义乃是近世科学的自然产儿，根据格外坚牢、方法格外精密，并不是古代实验主义的嫡派子孙。”＇72＇如果胡适在博士论文口试时真的受到了挫折，这个不再牵强附会的谨慎，或许就是他从挫折中得到的一个“收获”。
我们无须再多征引开了窍以后的胡适所说的话，来批评他在此处所犯的谬误。开窍以后的胡适，每次回首看《先秦名学史》，看到自己当时牵强附会、胡乱套用杜威的基本概念，乃至于使用一般人想当然耳、望文生义、以讹传讹、常使杜威为之掩卷太息的误解来界定实用主义，他一定会觉得无地自容、羞赧不已。我们在上文征引了他在《三论问题与主义》里所说的一段话。其滔滔雄辩的气概、其义正词严的凛然，与其说是在谆谆善诱茫茫苍生，不如说是在悔过，不如说像是在用口诀真经，驱魔除邪式地去涤荡（exorcise）那依附其身的“异端邪说”：“一切主义，一切学理，都该研究，但是只可认作一些假设的见解，不可认作天经地义的信条；只可认作参考印证的材料，不可奉为金科玉律的宗教；只可用作启发心思的工具，切不可用作蒙蔽聪明、停止思想的绝对真理。如此方才可以渐渐养成人类的创造的思想力，方才可以渐渐使人类有解决具体问题的能力，方才可以渐渐解放人类对于抽象名词的迷信。”
